Reclaiming the True Purpose of 7 on 7s in High School Football

Black High School Football Coach Talking to Players 7v7

In this post, I want to address an issue that's been bothering me for a while: the current state of 7v7 tournaments. These events have so much potential to develop our athletes, but they've lost their way. Let's talk about how we can bring back the true essence of 7v7s and make them work for our teams.

I knew 7v7s were in trouble when they became a money grab. These events start immediately after football season with no time for proper coaching or building team chemistry. Players are handed cards with plays drawn up, running around in pajamas and sunglasses, mic'd up for a show. It's become a spectacle with fake scholarship offers and unrealistic formations. This needs to STOP ASAP!

Let's get back to basics. 7v7s should be about skill development, teamwork, and understanding the game. These events should provide our athletes with a chance to refine their techniques, improve their timing, and build chemistry with their teammates. It's about practicing realistic formations and concepts that will translate to success on the field.

How to Effectively Utilize 7v7s

  1. Focus on Fundamentals: Use 7v7s to drill the basics. Quarterbacks can work on their reads, receivers on their routes, and defensive backs on their coverage. This is the perfect setting to hone these essential skills without the full-contact element.

  2. Build Chemistry: This is a golden opportunity for players to develop a rapport with one another. A well-coordinated team knows each other’s moves and tendencies. Encourage your athletes to communicate, collaborate, and trust each other.

  3. Realistic Plays and Formations: Stick to the playbook. Use formations and concepts that you plan to implement during the season. This isn’t the time for trick plays or unrealistic setups. Keep it grounded and relevant to actual game situations.

  4. Quality Coaching: Coaches, your presence and guidance are crucial. 7v7s should not be a free-for-all. Lead your players, provide constructive feedback, and use this time to teach. Your involvement turns these sessions into invaluable learning experiences.

We need to reclaim 7v7s for what they should be: a tool for genuine development. Let's steer away from the spectacle and refocus on what truly matters—preparing our athletes for the real challenges they'll face on the field. It's time to prioritize coaching, teamwork, and realistic play.

Stay focused, stay driven, and let's get back to real football!
